It’s a Hawkeye State
September 15, 2016
Any Hawkeye win is a good win, but a win against the Iowa State Cyclones, now that is a victory that comes with bragging rights for at least a year. Growing up in Iowa not too far from Iowa City I was born and raised a Hawkeye fan.
I remember going to Kinnick and Carver as a little girl to watch the Hawks take on Iowa State in both football and basketball. What is almost even better than walking away with that W is that each and every Iowa fan gets to proudly say as loud as they please, “it’s a Hawkeye State!” When I played basketball we obviously had girls who were from out of state so when the IA vs. ISU game rolled around I had the privilege of talking about this rivalry and what it means to hawk fans all around the state. It’s fun to have such pride and be able to share that love with teammates who didn’t grow up around it. That goes for all sports and players born and/or raised Iowa. Although George was born in Wisconsin, and graduated in Oklahoma, he spent his childhood and half of his high school career in Iowa. For him to go out there, beat state 42-3 in Kinnick Stadium, during his senior year, on the same field his dad played on, and have the first touchdown of the game, well that is something he will remember for the rest of his life. It’s always going to be a Hawkeye State! XOXO CT
